CIFAL MADRID COMMEMORATES THE 5TH UN GLOBAL ROAD SAFETY WEEK

6-12 May 2019, Madrid, Spain – The International Training Centre for Authorities and Leaders in Madrid (CIFAL Madrid) has joined the international road safety campaign “Save Lives #SpeakUp” in the framework of the 5th UN Global Road Safety Week, taking place 6 to 12 May 2019.

The campaign has initiated in Pozuelo de Alarcon (Madrid) on May 7, following Roquetas de Mar (Almeria) on May 8, Concello de Sanxenxo (Pontevedra) on May 9, closing the event in Malaga on the 10th of May. The campaign gathers national authorities, including local government officials, police officers, school members, and the association of parents.


USING DIGITAL INNOVATION AND TECHNOLOGY TO ADVANCE ROAD SAFETY

25-26 April 2019, Shanghai, China – The United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) and its International Training Centre for Authorities and Leaders in Shanghai (CIFAL Shanghai), in collaboration with the Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences (SASS), Tongji University and AB InBev, hosted the two-day “Road Safety and Digital Innovation: Asia-Pacific Conference” in Shanghai, with a focus on using innovative solutions to address road safety issues. 

Attended by over 80 government officials, experts, and business leaders from China and the Asia-Pacific region to exchange best practices and ideas on how technology can be applied to enhance road safety.  The conference focused on China’s road safety and innovative digital solutions to reducing traffic casualties.


UNITAR AND CIFAL MADRID CONDUCT CHILD ROAD SAFETY AND POST-CRASH RESPONSE TRAINING

3-4 April 2019, Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic – UNITAR and the International Training Centre for Authorities and Leaders in Madrid (CIFAL Madrid) in collaboration with the Traffic and Emergency Response Association (Asociación de Rescate en Tráfico y Emergencias – ARTE), the Dominican Automobile Club (Automóvil Club Dominicano – ACD), and with the support of Fundación Smart Baby – JOIE conducted the training titled “Child Road Safety and Post-Crash Response”.

The training was the first in the Dominican Republic, bringing together government authorities responsible for road safety and post-crash response. 110 officials from the National Institute of Transport and Transit (Instituto Nacional de Tránsito y Transporte Terrestre – INTRANT), the Ministry of Health, the National and City Police, as well as first responder agencies, took part in the training to learn about safety belt and child restraint laws in different countries and how they can be applied in the local context, as well as to observe injury care techniques, especially for children.


NETWORK OF UNIVERSITIES ON ROAD SAFETY IS PRESENTED AT UNITAR’S ROAD SAFETY AFRICA CONFERENCE

26-27 November 2018, Johannesburg, South Africa – UNITAR, in collaboration with eThekwini Municipality, the International Training Centre for Authorities and Leaders in Durban (CIFAL Durban), and AB InBev, hosted the two-day “Road Safety Africa Conference” in Johannesburg.

Members of the Global City Pilot Steering Committee at the “Road Safety Africa Conference,” senior government authorities, private sector executives, academics, international organizations’ representatives, road safety experts, and civil society leaders gathered to exchange knowledge and best practices to improve road safety, leading to collaboration on and implementation of targeted interventions in the African region. The event also sought to empower government officials by providing them with the technical know-how and management skills to implement interventions that improve road safety and mobilize stakeholders from different sectors to support regional road safety interventions.


CIFAL PHILIPPINES LAUNCHED THE “DRIVE FOR ROAD SAFETY” CAMPAIGN

20 September 2018, Taguig City, Philippines – The International Training Centre for Authorities and Leaders in the Philippines (CIFAL Philippines), in partnership with 3M, launched the “Drive for Road Safety” campaign at Bonifacio Global City.

Road safety has become a priority for the country as it directly impacts its economic growth. According to the World Bank, halving road traffic crashes and deaths between 2014-2038 could represent an increase of approximately 7% of the Gross Domestic Product in the Philippines.


CIFAL CURITIBA AND THE FIEP SYSTEM INCREASING AWARENESS ABOUT ROAD SAFETY

24 September 2018, Curitiba, Brazil – During the month of August, the International Training Centre for Authorities and Leaders in Curitiba (CIFAL Curitiba) and the Federation of Industries of the State of Parana (FIEP) System hosted 4 Road Shows at the Federal Technological University of Paraná (UTFPR), Autonomous University Center of Brazil (UniBrasil), FAE Bom Jesus, and University of the State of Paraná.

The Road Show is an educational program that aims to raise awareness among youth about the importance of adopting a respectful traffic culture to reduce traffic incidents and improve the quality of life.  The program was developed by psychologists and police officers with several years of experience in road safety and has been adapted for youngsters between the ages of 16 and 25. During the Shows, experiences and testimonies from participants, firefighters, paramedics, and victims of road accidents are presented.


UNITAR HOSTS ROAD SAFETY CONFERENCE IN SUPPORT OF SAFER ROADS FOR GURUGRAM

27-29 August 2018, Gurugram, India – The United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR), in collaboration with the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, the apex body for Road Safety in the State of Haryana – Transport Department and the Safer Roads for Gurugram Initiative hosted the “Road Safety High-Level Conference” in Gurugram, India. The Conference was officially inaugurated by Mr. Dhanpat Singh, Additional Chief Secretary of the State of Haryana Transport Department, and Mr. Inderjeet Singh, Joint Secretary – Road Safety of the Government of Haryana Transport Department.

The Conference included a roundtable discussion to facilitate the exchange of best practices in road safety policies that address vulnerable road users. Local and international panelists included Ms. Catalina Garcia, Director, Global Corporate Affairs /Social Marketing & Social Norms, Healthier World, AB InBev; Mr. Viren Dhulla, Vice President & Head – Corporate Health Safety & Wellbeing at Vodafone India; Mrs. Rinika Grover, Head – CSR of Apollo Tyres, Ms. Rhea Cecile Goveas of AIP Foundation in Vietnam, Mrs. Rubina Bembi, Assistant Vice President CSR Solutions of IL&FS Education, Mr. Rajni Gandhi, Founder of TRAX Road Safety NGO, Dr. Sushma Sagar, Associate Professor & Head Surgeon, Trauma Care of All India Institutes of Medical Sciences (AIIMS),  Ms. Neha Khullar, Director of Projects at Muskaan Foundation in Jaipur, Mr. Dipak K. Dash, Senior Journalist at Times of India, Mr. Armstrong Pame from the Municipality of Manipur. They shared recommendations and best practices and presented opportunities for collaboration. 


CIFAL MADRID SUCCESSFULLY CONCLUDES ITS FIRST POSTGRADUATE COURSE ON ROAD SAFETY

22 June 2018, Madrid, Spain – UNITAR’s affiliated International Training Centre for Authorities and Leaders in Madrid (CIFAL Madrid), in collaboration with the Real Automóvil Club de España (RACE) and the European University, successfully concluded today the Postgraduate Course on Road Safety Management and Leadership, aimed at managers, leaders and professionals in this field.

The course seeks to broaden knowledge on road safety, presenting a comprehensive view of the factors, methods, and best practices that help prevent road crashes. It included 44 master classes led by 42 professionals, government officials, and experts on road safety. This first-of-its-kind course brought together 18 students from Colombia, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Mexico, Paraguay, and Spain.


UNITAR PROVIDES ROAD SAFETY TRAINING TO THE GOVERNMENT OF THE DOMINICAN REPUBLIC

8-9 May 2018, Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic – UNITAR, in close collaboration with the Ministry of Public Works and Communications (MOPC) and the National Institute for Transport and Transit (INTRANT), convened the “International Workshop on Mobility and Road Safety Best Practices” in Santo Domingo on 8-9 May.

The two-day event was attended by 113 representatives from government offices responsible for transit, transport, road safety, academic institutions, NGOs, and media. The workshop panel discussions were engaging and led by experts from Spain, Colombia, Uruguay, Brazil, and Mexico, who shared practical solutions to improve road safety.


NEW CIFAL MADRID TO IMPROVE ROAD SAFETY THROUGH TRAINING AND EDUCATION

9 March 2018, Madrid, Spain – To mark the launch of the new International Training Center for Authorities and Leaders (CIFAL) in Madrid, a meeting was held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation of Spain. The meeting brought together Gregorio Serrano, Director General of Traffic (DGT) at Spain’s Ministry of the Interior, Carlos Espinosa de los Monteros, High Commissioner of the Government for the Marca España, and Carmelo Sanz, President of the Royal Automobile Club of Spain (RACE), and Mr. Alexander Mejía, Director of UNITAR’s Social Development Programme.
