
MANAGEMENT PRACTICES FOR SAFER ROADS LEARNING WEBINAR SERIES REACHES 89 COUNTRIES
9 November 2020, Geneva, Switzerland – UNITAR’s Road Safety Global Training Initiative successfully concluded its Learning Webinar Series on Management Practices for Safer Roads, reaching 895 participants from the public and private sectors, academia, and NGOs from 89 countries around the globe.
The Webinar Series included six online learning activities held between 17 June and 3 November 2020 in English, Spanish, Portuguese, and Chinese to cater to different regions worldwide.
The learning activities were hosted in partnership with renowned organizations, including the International Road Safety Federation (IRF); the Royal Automobile Club of Spain (RACE), the Regional Center in Support of the Private Sector (CR/SP); the Andean Community (CAN); United Cities and Local Governments – Regions; the World Family Organization (WFO), the Federation of Industries of the State of Parana (FIEP); the Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences (SASS); and the International Training Centres for Authorities and Leaders (CIFAL) from Atlanta, USA; Bogota, Colombia; Curitiba, Brazil; Madrid, Spain; Quito, Ecuador; and Shanghai, China. The Management Practices for Safer Roads Toolkit and the Learning Webinar Series were made possible through the support of AB InBev.

UNITAR AND THE ROYAL AUTOMOBILE CLUB OF SPAIN RENEW THEIR COOPERATION AGREEMENT TO BUILD CAPACITY FOR ROAD SAFETY
26 October 2020, Geneva, Switzerland – UNITAR and the Royal Automobile Club of Spain (RACE) renewed their three-year cooperation agreement to continue to build capacity through CIFAL Madrid – the International Training Centre for Authorities and Leaders in Madrid.
The CIFAL Centre will continue to provide learning opportunities. It will facilitate knowledge sharing between public officials and Ibero-America leaders in road safety management, transport, and mobility. The capacity-building activities of the Centre aim to contribute to SDG 3.6, which makes an urgent call to “halve the number of global deaths and injuries from road traffic accidents”.
The collaboration between UNITAR and RACE seeks to reduce fatalities and injuries associated with road traffic crashes by building capacities, facilitating the exchange of best practices, and promoting partnerships.

IN SUPPORT OF BRAZIL’S NATIONAL ROAD SAFETY WEEK, UNITAR HOSTS “MANAGEMENT PRACTICES FOR SAFER ROADS” LEARNING WEBINAR
23 September 2020, Geneva, Switzerland – UNITAR’s Division for People hosted the 4th “Webinar Series Management Practices for Safer Roads” session to kick off Brazil’s National Road Safety Week and raise awareness about practical interventions and best practices that improve road safety.
The Webinar Series features the Management Practices for Safer Roads Toolkit, which is an interactive e-learning tool that presents a management methodology that can help improve road safety by 1) identifying the number of deaths and injuries related to road traffic crashes and risk factors; 2) identifying critical road locations or sections where excessive numbers of crashes occur; 3) conducting safety assessments of existing road infrastructure; 4) and outlining engineering treatments and corrective measures to improve road safety.
The 4th session of the Webinar Series was hosted in collaboration with the National Service of Industrial Learning in Paraná (Senai), AB InBev, Brazil’s National Traffic Department (Denatran), and the CIFAL Curitiba, brought together 76 participants from governments, the private sector, academic institutions, and road safety practitioners to learn about the Toolkit and its practical application in Brazil with positive outcomes.

UNITAR LAUNCHES WEBINAR SERIES ON MANAGEMENT PRACTICES FOR SAFER ROADS
22 June 2020, Geneva, Switzerland – UNITAR’s Division for People launched the “Webinar Series Management Practices for Safer Roads” to raise awareness about practical interventions and best practices that contribute to improving road safety. Mr. Nikhil Seth, Executive Director of UNITAR, kicked off the series and highlighted the importance of remaining focused on issues like road safety during these unprecedented times. “Let’s continue to take bold steps to reduce road traffic crashes, and let’s further collaborate so that when the COVID-19 pandemic is behind us, we stand ready to bring new learnings and best practices to the next decade of road safety action, ” stressed Mr. Seth.
The inaugural webinar, hosted in collaboration with the International Road Federation (IRF), AB InBev, and the CIFAL Global Network, brought together 192 participants from governments, the private sector, academic institutions, and road safety practitioners representing 63 countries to learn about the Toolkit and its practical and successful application in cities like Brasilia. State Secretary of Transportation and Mobility of the Federal District of Brazil, Mr. Valter Casimiro Silveira, shared how Brasilia has reduced road traffic fatalities and injuries by analyzing crash data, identifying crash “hot spots” and improving the highest-risk roads.

UNITAR LAUNCHES THE 2020 EDITION OF THE POSTGRADUATE PROGRAMME “ROAD SAFETY MANAGEMENT AND ADMINISTRATION”
5 May 2020, Madrid, Spain – UNITAR and the International Training Centre for Authorities and Leaders in Madrid (CIFAL Madrid), together with RACE and the European University, are pleased to open its 2020 edition of the Postgraduate Programme “Expert in Road Safety Management and Administration”. The four-week academic programme aims to equip participants with knowledge about strategic initiatives that have successfully reduced road traffic crashes.
With the aim of providing training on this timely issue, UNITAR, CIFAL Madrid, RACE, and the European University have developed a comprehensive training programme comprised of four modules, including research, human mobility and prevention policies, road safety factors, and road safety knowledge. The programme targets high-level professionals working on road safety policy-making from the public, private, and academic sectors.

UNITAR CONTINUES TO PROMOTE ROAD SAFETY THROUGH MULTI-STAKEHOLDER PARTNERSHIPS
6 February 2020, Geneva, Switzerland – In the framework of the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting held in Davos, Switzerland, from 21 to 24 January 2020, The United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR), in collaboration with AB InBev renewed its collaboration to continue to “Strengthening Road Safety – A partnership to build capacity, drive innovation and deliver meaningful impact”.
The partnership is aligned with the call from the United Nations General Assembly during its seventy-fourth session[1], which invited all relevant stakeholders, international organizations, development banks and funding agencies, foundations, professional associations, and private sector companies to scale up funding in support of road safety”. At the same time, the General Assembly approved 12 voluntary global performance targets for road safety risk factors and encouraged Member States to take steps toward achieving those targets. The General Assembly also requested the United Nations system to support Member States to help them achieve global targets.

UNITAR AND THE CONGRESS OF PERÚ HOST INTERNATIONAL FORUM ON ROAD SAFETY AND URBAN MOBILITY
5-6 September 2019, Lima, Perú – UNITAR and the International Training Centre for Authorities and Leaders in Madrid (CIFAL Madrid) in collaboration with the Congress of the Republic of Peru, hosted the “International Forum on Road Safety and Sustainable and Inclusive Urban Mobility”, bringing together legislators and decision-makers to discuss how to improve road safety and integrate it into sustainable mobility and transport infrastructure planning and design.
The event was held at the National Congress, bringing together members of the Commission of Transports and Communications of the Congress of Peru and representatives from professional associations, non-governmental organizations, the private sector, academic institutions, and the media. International participants from Argentina, Bolivia, Colombia, Guatemala, Honduras, and Spain also attended the forum.

UNITAR LAUNCHES TOOLKIT ON ROAD SAFETY MANAGEMENT
15 July 2019, New York, USA – In the framework of the High-Level Political Forum 2019: Empowering People and Ensuring Inclusiveness and Equality, UNITAR launched an interactive e-learning Road Safety Toolkit that presents a practical management methodology to collect data on the number and location of deaths by road user type; identify hazardous and critical road locations and sections where excessive numbers or severity of crashes occur; outline corrective measures; and implement interventions and monitor results.
The Toolkit is based on the premise that achieving road safety targets requires, among others, improving existing road infrastructure for the benefit of all road users, especially the most vulnerable. It is based on a three-fold approach that provides practical solutions, participatory contributions from multi-stakeholders, and results-based interventions. It highlights local projects in which the methodology has been implemented and tested. Local demonstration projects include cities like Sao Paulo and Brasilia in Brazil; Shanghai, China; Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic; Gurugram, India; Zacatecas, Mexico; and Johannesburg, South Africa.

CIFAL CURITIBA PROMOTES THE YELLOW MAY CAMPAIGN TO ADVANCE ROAD SAFETY IN THE STATE OF PARANA IN BRAZIL
13 May 2017, Curitiba, Brazil – Throughout the month of May and to commemorate the 5th UN Global Road Safety Week, the International Training Centre for Authorities and Leaders in Curitiba (CIFAL Curitiba) is promoting another edition of the international Yellow May Campaign to raise awareness about the high fatality rates from road traffic crashes occurring around the world and to mobilize society and various actors to participate in prevention activities.
CIFAL Curitiba and the Federation of Industries of the State of Parana (Sistema FIEP) are committed to raising awareness among their 3,858 employees to promote safer traffic culture. This year, the Yellow May Campaign focuses on the theme “IN TRAFFIC, LIFE IS THE DIRECTION“, emphasizing that life is the utmost priority when driving.
